Tehran vows reciprocal action following ‘malicious’ European Parliament resolution
TEHRAN — The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday issued a scathing rebuke condemning a recent resolution by the European Parliament as a “malicious distortion of reality” and an “unlawful interference” in the country’s sovereign affairs.
In a detailed statement, Tehran warned that any “interventionist” measures targeting Iran’s armed forces or the guardians of its national security would be met with an “immediate and proportional reciprocal response,” placing full responsibility for the fallout on European instigators.
The European Parliament’s resolution on Thursday passed with 562 votes in favor, 9 against, and 57 abstentions. It voiced objections to how Iranian security forces behaved during recent unrest, which Iranian officials maintain were legitimate measures to preserve order against foreign-backed actors.
By calling for expanded sanctions and the designation of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC)—the cornerstone of Iran’s national defense—as a terrorist organization, the EU is seen by Tehran as prioritizing a politically motivated agenda over the principles of international law and sovereign immunity.
This hostile move follows a January 12 decision by EP President Roberta Metsola to ban all Iranian diplomatic representatives from the Parliament's premises.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry asserted that the European Parliament has lost any “moral qualification” to lecture other nations on human rights or the rule of law.
The ministry pointed to the “catastrophic performance” of European lawmakers regarding the “ongoing genocide” of Palestinians in Gaza, arguing that their “approving silence” toward the Israeli war crimes while targeting the Islamic Republic are “two sides of the same coin.”
It also said European drafters of the resolution knowingly relied on “lies produced by the Zionist media apparatus and the warmongering faction in the United States” to manufacture a pretext for intervention.
Regarding the violent riots and terror attacks across Iran that led to the death of over 3,000, Iranian authorities maintain they possess solid evidence proving that peaceful gatherings were hijacked by terrorist elements affiliated with the U.S. and Israel.
